Cross Stitch Birth Sampler: Make It Unique, Give it Love!

89 / 100 SEO Score

For cross stitch enthusiasts all over the world, well designed patterns and kits are their favorite way in which they can create a beautifully made cross stitch birth sampler, card, wall hanging, pillow and so forth.

However, as many of us use our cross stitching in order to create gifts for our loved ones, we can sometimes be at a loss as we look for ways in which to provide them with unique pieces which are personal to them.

Customizing Your Cross Stitch Birth Sampler

Occasions such as birthdays, weddings and births all require the ability to customize our patterns in order to cater for the needs of the receiver. In the event that we are creating a birth sampler, we want to commemorate the joyous occasion of a new baby entering our lives.

However, with limitations on some designs on the web, it can be increasingly hard to put our own little touches to our cross stitch baby sampler gift.

One of the options we have in order to obtain a customized baby sampler is to pay for someone to create this for us, taking into consideration the additions we wish to make on the design. However, this means that we are unable to complete this ourselves, almost making the baby sampler less of a precious gift which is also a waste of our cross stitching skills.

By their very nature birth samplers are inherently unique when completed by adding the  infant’s birth details. However, by following a few steps, we can make changes to designs we see on the web and in craft books ourselves, becoming more competent cross-stitchers and also creating a unique gift.

Three ways to customize a cross stitch sampler

Customizing a cross stitch birth sampler design is not too difficult, nor will it take up much of your time to complete, granted that you are not looking to make a wide range of changes to your initial design.

  • One of the first things we can do in order to make our cross stitch baby sampler gift more unique and personable is to include our initials in small letters in the corner of the sampler.
  • Or, you could choose your own stitched logo. Someone I know always stitches a simple paw-print in the corner of every design. Doesn’t have to be a paw-print, but you could do something similar with your own logo.
  • Or, you can take this to a whole new level by designing your own monogram. I see this a being akin to a fancy label you see in the neck of a bought garment. Creating one takes a bit of effort on your part. But once created to your satisfaction, you simply use it for every future piece you create.

How to create a personalized monogram

Here are my recommended steps to creating your own monogram:

  1. Copy the letters (keep it to 2) you require on two pieces of squared paper.
  2. Place one on a light box, or on a window, then add the other over the top of it, so that you can see both letters.
  3. Rearrange the letters until you are happy with the results, and then copy these letters onto one sheet of squared paper, using a different colored pen for each letter.
  4. Experiment with intertwining the letters. And there you have your personalized monogram.

Not only does this show that we made the piece ourselves, but it will also remind mother and baby of who made the gift in later years. For a truly special reminder, you could even look into stitching a message to baby on the back of the baby sampler which is guaranteed to make it a more treasured possession in years to come.

How about adding bead work?

In some cases, we may feel that traditional cross stitch baby sampler designs are a little flat and are not as decorative as they potentially could be.

By adding colored beads to the piece, it will transform the baby sampler from a flat piece to an embellished piece and help it to really stand out and be a memorable addition to baby’s room.

As you become more competent both in your designs and stitching, you could even look into designing your own baby sampler designs which can be intricate, vibrant and truly personable.

There are a number of cross stitch birth sampler designs which can be either purchased or free then instantly downloaded from the web. All of which can contain the typical designs we associate with baby samplers, and more.

Here is a source of some good free baby cross stitch samplers. By adding a few personal touches, we can not only effectively customize our cross stitch baby sampler, but also create a truly special gift for baby worth celebrating.

Or, how about this neat idea from parents who thought to get tiny little prints/moldings of their new baby’s hands and feet and then used them to decorate this baby sampler on the left clever!

Summary

For my own records, my  favorite method is to take a photograph of every finished design (before it is framed, but after it is ironed). Keep your pictures in a special album, such as a stitchers journal, so that you can look at your achievements for years to come.
