Cross Stitch Tutorial Index

We cover a lot of different topics on this site - this cross stitch tutorial index gives you a pretty good idea of the subjects we cover.

Shortly, we will be introducing videos of each stitch in this department.

The following is a complete index of all Cross Stitch tutorials on this site - presented in alphabetical sequence.

Backstitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Backstitch is a stitch used to outline designs or form letters on a cross stitch pattern. It's very easy to do since it's simply a line of stitches where each stitch touches the stitches next to it. Cross stitch patterns usually show a backstitch with a heavy solid line. In most cases, you only use a single thread when you're backstitching. Traditionally, most stitchers wait until they've completed all other stitching before they backstitch since this stitch adds the finishing touches to a project. . . . keep reading
Buttonhole Wheel Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Buttonhole Wheel Stitch is perfect for creating lovely flowers. You also will find this stitch is a cute way to create eyes. This stitch is a variation of the Buttonhole Stitch. In a Buttonhole Wheel Stitch, the stitches form a circle and create a nice "wagon wheel" effect. . . . keep reading
Chain Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Chain Stitch is a popular and versatile stitch. It is easy to do, and you can use many different types of thread to create this stitch. The secret to a perfect chain stitch is to create identical loops by keeping the tension consistent. . . . keep reading
Couching Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Couching Stitch is a wonderful way to form decorative outlines in your projects. Creating a Couching Stitch usually involves two threads and two needles. This stitch can add texture and variety to your cross-stitch projects. . . . keep reading
Double-Running Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Double-Running Stitch is a simple stitch that looks the same on both sides of your fabric. This stitch is used with Blackwork to great effect. With a Double-Running Stitch, you do two runs of stitching, missing squares both times so that when you finish, you have one complete line. . . . keep reading
Fractional Stitches
Liz Lounsbury
The fractional stitches are the quarter stitch, the half stitch, and the three-quarter stitch. You create a fractional stitch by completing only part of the traditional cross stitch X shape. These stitches allow you to create unique and interesting designs. Using fractional stitches, you can add curves and angles. The stitches also add subtle color details to a project and are very popular in complex patterns. . . . keep reading
French Knot
Kelly Morgan
The French knot can be a little tricky but with practice you can master it. Some people find it better to work the knot with the fabric stretched in an embroidery hoop using a new chenille or straw needle. It makes it very easy to slide through the loops of thread if the needle is new and smooth. If you don't have a new needle to hand, you can get good results by washing your older needle and then when it's dry using an emery board on any rough parts. . . . keep reading
Full Cross Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Full Cross Stitch is the basic stitch for most cross stitch designs. It is easy to stitch, which is why so many people love to cross stitch. You can quickly complete large areas of your design with this stitch. Moreover, you can add embellishments, such as beads, to these stitches. You also can use two different colors of thread to create a dramatic effect. . . . keep reading
Joining and Ending Stitches
Liz Lounsbury
It is easy to do joining and ending stitches when you're cross stitching. You use existing stitches as a way to hide the ends of your thread. By joining and ending thread this way, you create a tidy project that doesn't have loose ends dangling on the back. . . . keep reading
Lazy Daisy Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Lazy Daisy Stitch forms perfect petals in your cross stitch patterns and is easy to do. Because it's simple, many stitchers learned to create a Lazy Daisy Stitch when they were young. This pretty petal stitch is perfect for everyone, including beginners . . . keep reading
Loop Start Method
Leni Bernardo
To use the loop start, it is essential you have an even number of thread strands required for the stitches (for instance, two, four or six strands). The advantage of this start is there is no knot, leaving a flat surface. The purpose of the loop start is to anchor your thread right at the beginning of your project; you use this method only to begin your very first stitch in the center. You should use a joining stitch for all other thread starts . . . keep reading
Needlelace Flower Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Needlelace Flower Stitch is a beautiful way to create unique petals for the flowers in your projects. Although the Needlelace Flower Stitch can seem a little complicated, it actually is quite easy to create once you know the steps. The end result is always lovely. . . . keep reading
Satin Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Satin Stitch is a terrific stitch to use when you want to add a small amount of decorative detail to your project. This stitch adds a smooth and somewhat shiny effect to the design, which is why it is called a Satin Stitch. The Satin Stitch is very versatile since you can work it in several different directions to achieve various effects. . . . keep reading
Smyrna Stitch
Liz Lounsbury
The Smyrna Stitch is a great way to create pretty flowers and stars. You also can use this stitch to add a border or extra flair to your design. The Smyrna Stitch is easy to create. It's merely a plus sign (+) stitched either under or over the traditional cross stitch X. You can vary the length of the stitches to create truly unique patterns. In addition, you can add a French Knot or even a bead to the center if you're creating a flower . . . keep reading
Stem Stitch
Olivia Storm
The stem stitch is a great stitch for outlining work, creating curves and obviously stitching plant stems and leaves. In addition, the stitch can also be used as filler by working a number of rows next to each other . . . keep reading
Waste Knot
Suzie Perry
Most cross stitchers tend to agree that knotting your thread is not good form and therefore best avoided. Therefore, it sounds like we must learn special ways to secure the thread without using knots when starting our Cross Stitch projects. Well! Not necessarily! But please be a little patient while I explain further . . . keep reading

"I have been a regular reader of Patterns Patch web site. What attracted me in the first place was the quaint name. I so enjoy reading their newletters, find it very up todate and easy to read.

Another plus for Patterns Patch, is the prompt delivery when I ordered a book - I live in Cape Town, South Africa, and what a pleasure to receive this, sometimes quicker than our own postal delivery service!

Another plus factor is their prompt replies to any queries I may have, in fact my most recent one, which is where can I find Florentine embrodery - specifically with regard to a bible cover I would like to do.

Patterns Patch are in no way "small minded and unhelpful" and were more than helpful in helping me in my Florentine search.."

"Well done and keep up the good work."

Barbara Perkin
