Subject: Patterns Patch Makes it to "The Final" ...
... the final of what? (more later)...
Hi
Once more, welcome to all our readers, we hope the past two weeks have been kind to you and you enjoy reading this issue of your Cross Stitch Tips & News letter.
Oh, and we'll tell you about our success in reaching "the final" later...
*~~*
If you do nothing else with this news letter...
** MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS **
It will take you about 45 seconds and might well save yours or a loved ones life some day (true!).
This lifesaving tip is in the number 1 position in our Inspirations department, which is available to ALL readers.
Take a little time to do your family and friends a BIG favor by passing this essential information on to them.
*~~*
Our First SAL...
As many of you know, we held our first Stitch-ALong (SAL) last weekend. This was very much a trial run, both to check out the technology (which failed) and for most of us to learn what a SAL is, and how it functions.
On the technology side we learned that running the SAL partly on FaceBook and partly on our Patterns Patch website could have been more satisfactory. We'll resolve any issues with this before the next SAL.
We'd like to give a really big thank you to our stalwart organizer Sandye for her painstaking effors in cajoling and providing motivatation to her fellow stitchers who took part last weekend. Without Sandye's efforts the SAL wouldn't have taken place.
What is a SAL?
For anybody who wants to know what a SAL is, here's a recap from Sandye, "The first weekend of every month is our UFO SAL. You choose an UnFinished Object (UFO) you have that you want to try to get done".
"You post which project you'll be working on and post a picture of what it looked like before the weekend. You stitch as much as you can on that particular project for the entire weekend (Friday morning to Sunday night). At the end of the weekend, we all post how much we've gotten done, post an updated pic so we can all see our own progress..."
"Anytime you get frustrated with the project, or just need a little kick in the rearend to get started on it again, the rest of the people in the same SAL with you are there to keep you on track!"
"It's been great! These SAL weekends really helped me stay motivated with my Kitties (a particularly large and difficult project) and now they're done!"
"These SALs are really great for motivating you and keeping you going on those tougher projects, or even the ones where you have deadlines to meet that just loom over you!"
What Benefit do we get from a Chat Room?
In order to provide a more enjoyable experience we planned on using a chatroom so stitchers could discuss their progress, and whatever else they chose, while they stitched. So, it was a major disappointment for me when we failed to install the chat room software successfully, and so it wasn't available. Shortly after the SAL had ended, we finally got the Chat Room software working and it's now permanently available to all Standard and Associate members of Patterns Patch. To be able to chat, you need to first login and then click on Chat in the Community Forums category (left-hand nav panel on the Members home page).
To enter the Chat Room you need only enter your Patterns Patch login name.
Associate Membership
One drawback of making a chatroom available to the general public is spammers will usually find it within a week or two, and when that happens we'll soon lose control of it (for at least part of the time anyway), something we definitely don't want to happen. Therefore, for that reason the chat room must remain limited to our closed membership only, which would have which excluded all subscribers who aren't signed-up members.
As we told you last time, to overcome this restriction we've created an Associate Membership, which is fr*e, but limits access to just the chat rooms and our community forums (the Cross Stitch forum and General forum). Associate members will also qualify for a 20+% discount on some of the patterns in our Cross Stitch Store.
(Note that only patterns that have been in our Cross Stitch Library for three months or more, will be offered for general sale in our store).
If you want to join Patterns Patch as an Associate member and enjoy access to the chat rooms and community forums, please join here. The subscription form is easy to use and only asks for: your name, email address, login name and passw*rd (you choose these last two yourself). Should you have problems with any of this, please let me know here.

Patterns Patch Battles Through to The Final
About a month ago we submitted an entry into a competiton called the "Content Sharing Showdown", organized by the Stompernet corporation; ours was one of more than 440 entries.
In order to whittle the entries down to a manageable 36 finalists, all entrants were asked to vote on their rivals' submissions. We were delighted when informed our entry "Why is Counted Cross-Stitch so Addicitive" featured strongly in the chosen 36.
The final 36 entries are being judged over the next week by the people on a database of more than 100,000 names.
If you're feeling generous and would like to help Patterns Patch, please go to our entry and leave a comment at the bottom of the page (and don't worry, you won't have to join anything). The link to our entry is right here:
Why Is Counted Cross-Stitch So Addictive? Performing well in a contest like this spreads the Patterns Patch name across the web. Which in turn helps us in our ultimate goal of becoming a huge cross-stitch community with the necessary influence to arrange large discounts for our subscribers from all major cross stitch suppliers.
We'll let you know in the next issue how we fared in the final.
Thank you very much for any help you can give Patterns Patch with our entry.
*~~* I Bet I Can Guess Your Number: The Winners Choices
In the last issue we promised to let you know which reports our four prize winners chose. Both Agnes Benceagi and Betty Stabler expressed an interest in trying Blackwork, and so were delighted to receive Blackwork for Beginners an excellent step-by-step introduction to this beguiling cross stitch niche, which has steadily been growing in popularity since the mid 1990s.
Miriam Rautenbach is keen to improve her Framing techniques and so chose Finishing The Project., which reveals a number of low-cost options to creating that professional finish for any craft project.
Marie Claude Gagnon has yet to make her selection. And if you'd like to check out what this is about, here's the link to the puzzle/game again:

This Issue's Tip:
How To Choose the Right Fabric For Your Next Project ~ Part 2 (of 3)
If you missed part 1 of this series or wish to read it again, you can do so here .
Now that we've talked about the different types of fabric available, and how they differ from one another…it's time to figure out the fabric size you need to make sure the stitching fits. There's nothing more frustrating than putting hours, or even months into a project only to realize that the piece of fabric you're using is too small.
Step one of course is to choose the pattern you want to stitch. No matter how large or small the pattern is you'll be able to find just the right fabric to stitch it on. At some point you'll need either a calculator, or for the braver souls a piece of paper and pencil. You'll have to do some math later on, and these will come in handy.
Step two is to choose what type of fabric you want to work with. This will greatly effect how big the fabric must be. There are several different counts to choose from. For example, aida cloth is available in 8 count, all the way to 22 count. The most popular aida counts used are 14, 16, and 18 count.
Evenweave and Linen comes in generally higher counts, usually from 18 to 55 count. The most common counts used are 25, 28, and 32. If you're trying a new count for the first time, think about choosing a smaller project. This way if you're stitching on something you don't particularly care for, it'll be stitched up quickly and you can move on to a new project sooner.
Step three: Now for the math part of the process, boring I know - yet totally necessary. I'll use random numbers in order to walk you through the process easily. Let's say your project is 100 stitches wide by 100 stitches tall. You chose 18-count fabric. Simply take the 100 stitches and divide it by the 18 count. You get 5.5 inches. You know your finished design will be 5.5 inches by 5.5 inches. Now you have to decide how much empty space you want around your design.
Typically, if framing the finished piece you want two or three inches around all edges of the design. You simply add this to the finished design size. If you wanted two inches extra around the design you'd simply get a piece of fabric no smaller than 7.5 inches by 7.5 inches. To simplify this process you can use the Cross Stitch Calculator we've provided for you. To access the calculator, go to the "Resources" category at Patterns Patch and select "Cross Stitch Calculator".
The 3rd and final part of this series will appear in the next issue of Cross Stitch Tips & News on March 29th 2008). |

We have a business here, Unclaimed Baggage, where all the unclaimed lost luggage goes from air flights. The contents of the bags are processed and sold.
You never know what you might find!!
Well, last Friday, I found a plastic organizer box of 133 embroidery threads--wrapped on cards and organized by number for only $4.00--
You would have thought that I had found sunken treasure!!!! lol |

The airlines keep the unclaimed baggage for so many months and if it is not claimed in that time, they have to clear it out...UBC (Unclaimed Baggage Center) also has a building with unclaimed cargo--and you can find some VERY interesting things there!!! lol
According to their website, they are the only ones with this type of store. I had heard years ago that they had contracts with all the airlines but I don't know how things are working today....

| Welcome To Our First SAL... |
Posted by slckstitcher
Mar 07,2008 4:18 PM |
I'm so excited that our first SAL is underway! I hope everyone enjoys it and will encourage others to join next month!
The general purpose of a SAL is to bring stitchers together for one common goal...to keep each other motivated so we can all have some completed projects by the end of the year.
First, everyone should post a comment here saying what project they've chosen to work on for the SAL. The projects chosen are completely up to the individual. As long as you make some progress on something, that's all that matters!
You should post a picture of your cross stitched piece before you start working on this weekend. Then throughout the weekend, work on your chosen project as much as you're able to. Even if you only get a few stitches in, that's still progress!! After the SAL weekend is over, you should post a picture of what you were able to accomplish. This will greatly help in keeping us motivated on our projects. John has been kind enough to create a separate photo gallery just for SAL pictures only!
The SAL goes from Saturday morning through Sunday night. Don't worry if you can't post a picture of your piece. It's not a problem. You can keep track of how may hours you work on it, what percentage of the piece is completed, or the number of stitches you were able to do...anything that will allow you to follow your progress.
Please feel free to post here anytime you need to. Becoming friends with everyone here will make the SAL more enjoyable. Who couldn't use more stitching buddies? This will be helpful if you lose your motivation, run into any problems you need help with, or simply want someone to celebrate with if you've gotten a lot accomplished or maybe even finished that large project finally!
Whatever you do, enjoy the SAL! That's what it's here for! I'll be periodically checking in from time to time. I'll be more than happy to answer any questions, offer any help or advice if I'm able to..whatever you need!
Lastly, if anyone in the SAL group has any suggestions on how to improve on this SAL, or if you have ideas for specifically themed SALs (favorite designer, holiday patterns, anything at all) that you'd like to have started here at Facebook just let me know! I'll be more than happy to organize as much as I can for everyone! There's 4 weekends in every month, and we've only got 1 of them scheduled so far...

Well, I know that I missed this weekends SAL but I spent a frustrating weekend gridding for a large piece I am doing for my son. I spend most of my time pulling out grid lines and redoing them.
I am using a great product called "Easy-Count Guideline" which at least makes it easier. I would like to say that after most of a weekend gridding, I am finished but alas I am only half-way done.
Next weekend I'll be better prepared to participate. I really thought I would get some actual stitching accomplished before the weekend was over...

I have been asked to do a project of a wolf in the early morning and the picture background is early morning grey mist. There is alot of background and I would like to find a pearl grey fabric to do the picture on to save time.
This is a timed commission picture. Can any one help.
I've tried Stab N Stash for fabric in the past and was not impressed with the results I received. |

Have you done a search on Google? If you haven't, try Googling "pearl grey fabric" (don't forget the speech marks ~ they're important) or just "grey fabric". You should get quite a lot of results and many will possibly have what you want.
If searching "pearl grey fabric" doesn't find what you want, try replacing the speech marks with square brackets, i.e [pearl grey fabric]. This "loosens" the search a little and will give you more results.
eBay is another place well served with craft stores and suppliers and you should find what you need on there at a very nice price.
Good luck with the search ~ let us know how you get on...
