Would you prefer to
read this letter online?

Subject: It's Competition Time...

Hi

A very warm welcome to all our readers, we hope the past two weeks have been kind to you and you enjoy reading this issue of your Cross Stitch Tips & News letter.

*~~*
A recent question in the Cross Stitch Forum (What's a SAL?) created such an interest that one of our stalwart members, Sandye,  after explaining what a SAL is, has offered to conduct a SAL at the beginning of next month.

Here's Sandy's explanation and offer: "SAL means Stitch-ALong. I joined several of them on another MB (message board) I belong to. Here's an example of how it works:"

"The first weekend of every month is our UFO SAL. You choose an UnFinished Object you have that you want to try to get done. You post which project you'll be working on and post a picture of what it looked like before the weekend. You stitch as much as you can on that particular project for the entire weekend (Friday morning to Sunday night). At the end of the weekend, we all post how much we've gotten done, post an updated pic so we can all see our own progress..."

"Anytime you get frustrated with the project, or just need a little kick in the rearend to get started on it again, the rest of the people in the same SAL with you are there to keep you on track!"

"It's been great! These SAL weekends really helped me stay motivated with my Kitties (a particularly large and difficult project) and now they're done!"

"These SALs are really great for motivating you and keeping you going on those tougher projects, or even the ones where you have deadlines to meet that just loom over you!"

"If anyone would like to have an online SAL here at the board I'd be more than happy to get one started! We could have sign-ups for those who want to join for the next couple of weeks and then the first one would be the first weekend in March!"

"If any readers would like to take part, let me know here and I'll create a new post all about this, with details of how to sign up and where to post your pictures.".

*~~*

I saw a short video recently that reminded me of the time I worked in the university town of Grenoble (South Eastern France). Grenoble is located at the end of a horseshoe valley, nestling against the Alps and enjoys incredibly beautiful scenery. Now for me, something equally impressive was the ability of seemingly all French car drivers to effortlessly park large vehicles in tiny spaces.

I never tired of watching the local drivers park their cars and lost count of the number of times I thought, "No way will you get that in there.". Amazingly, once they decided to try they invariably succeeded. So when I came across the clip you're about to see, it seemed obvious to me that at least one French driver had moved to London ~ you be the judge!

*~~*

In the last issue of this letter we asked you to help us choose the name for our new 'power point' department. If you remember, Leni, Julia and I were deadlocked over the names Inspirations and Curiosity. We'd like to thank the many of you who voted for being so clear in what you preferred. It soon became apparent there was a clear winner , and that was...

... if you look on the Home page under Resources, you'll find we've already replaced  What's In Here? with the new department title.

For new readers this new department contains the range of emotive power point presentations we ran midway through. Go take a look (and don't forget your Kleenex!)

If you'd like to try and win a fr*e membership, reply to Membership for fr*e with the word 'pennies' in your email subject line (only one entry per reader please).

*~~*

In the previous issue we also told you about a second new department, which gives all readers the opportunity to have personal cross stitch patterns created for fr&e.

We're pleased to announce that Agnes took us up on this offer and one of this week's newly created patterns is the picture provided by Agnes.

It's Competiton Time ~ I Bet I Can Guess Your Number:

OK! Let's have some fun right now. As the title of this competition suggests, we're going to play a little guessing game in which you choose a number from a list and by asking you a couple of questions, I'll guess the number you chose.

The competition is to figure out how I manage to get it right each time... and the winner will be the first person to get it right, or in the event nobody gets it right , then the entry we think is closest to being right.

The winner will receive an in-depth cross stitch report of their choice from the three listed below. PLUS the most way out answer can choose either of the two reports left after the winner has chosen... AND we'll draw one entrant at random, who'll receive the one remaining report.

SO! There you have it a bit of fun and three prizes on offer.

Put your thinking caps on then go here to pit your wits against mine ~ good luck!

The three winners and the solution will be revealed in the next issue of Cross Stitch Tips & News.

Bet I Can Guess Your Number

To play the game again, simply use the same link above.

Here's the three cross stitch reports the winner frpm which the winner can choose:

Your Three Cross Stitch Reports
#~ Finishing the Project ~#

One of the major topics frequently asked in the forums and message boards centers around framing and presenting a cross-stitch project when the stitching is complete.

This new report walks you through the stages of preparing your project for framing, as well as giving  you lots of ideas and advice for mats and frames.

Topics covered include: stitched edgings and trims, washing and pressing your project, stretching & blocking, and mats & frames.
If you're one of the many stitchers who are unsure how best to complete a project this "how-to" report will answer all your questions.
Finishing the Project
#~ Blackwork for Beginners ~#

This superb introduction to Blackwork has been lovingly written by an ex-national cross stitch magazine editor who clearly has a passion for her craft.

Carol begins by clearly explaining what blackwork is and how it fits into the cross stitch family. Other topics described include: threads, fabrics, needles, additional helpful tools, plus a blackwork pattern to get you started.

For those stitchers who'd like to expand their skills and knowledge, give blackwork a try ~ there's an excellent chance you'll love it!

Next out from the wee book "A Woman's Work is Never Done" by Rowan B. Murphy:

"A man loves a woman so much, he asks her to marry ~ to change her name, quit her job, have and raise the babies, be home when he gets there, and move where his job is. You can hardly imagine what he might ask if he didn't love her." ~ Gabriele Burton.

This Issue's Tip:

Want Some Help With Enhancing Your Special Cross Stitch Projects?

Have you ever wanted to stitch something and it just needed that extra little something? Perhaps a nice little adornment or embellishment to emphasize one or more of its features.  Embellishing your projects is easy.  The only difficult part is deciding just what should you choose from the many options available!

For example, why not personalize the project? You can:

  • Put the current year on an ornament

  • Add the name or initials to a gift before giving it

  • Use your favorite color in a Stitching a string of Beadsdesign.
You can even add borders, or favorite quotes to make the project a little more personal no matter who you're giving it to.

Have you seen a finished piece that sparkled?  These sparkly threads are either metallic floss or blending filament.  Don't be intimidated by these specialty fibers.  If you use shorter lengths, and (if needed) a thread conditioner, you'll find they're not as daunting as they at first seem.

Finally, adding beads or buttons is another great way to adorn your cross stitch pieces. They both come in many styles and colors, and are easy to find. Buttons are especially popular for whimsical projects, whereas beads are generally used for the more detailed pieces.

And of course buttons and beads are easy to stitch, as shown in our illustration above. Take a brave step, make your next project unique and adorn it with something special. You'll be so glad you did!

Who Else Wants to Cross Stitch on Plastic Canvas?
If you haven't yet tried cross stitching on plastic canvas, you should. With plastic canvas, it's possible to create unique cross stitch projects that you simply can't create with fabric. Create Your Own Peyote Stitch Patterns
Our fascination with creating a fabric by stitching or weaving tiny beads together is not new. The Egyptians created burial garments using an early form of peyote stitch patterns over 4000 years ago! In more recent times the technique got its name from the Native Americans who created beaded items for ceremonial events. Over the years the techniques have changed although the name has stayed the same . . . keep reading

"Never again", I said to myself over and over. I must have been out of my mind when I chose Majestic Magnolia, a gorgeous design I simply couldn't resist. Today, it's my crowning achievement, one that would take five long years and several trips around the globe to complete . . . keep reading

I live about 2 hours from a LNS (local needlework shop), needless to say, I have to do quite a bit of mail ordering for my cross stitch needs - I've ordered from several places, but was wondering if anyone can share some of their favorite mail order stores? Thanks!

I know what you mean. Crafts is one of the industries that is going Internet because it saves on the cost of overhead and they can sell more at half the cost. Which is a bummer for those of us who like to touch what we buy, but it makes it easier to get what we need. That's what you call being between a rock and a hard place.

What's Your Favorite Way to Enhance Those Special Projects?

What's your favorite way to enhance those special projects to make them sparkle and shine??

For me, it depends on the project and who I'll be giving it to. If I want to sparkle to stand out more, I tend to lean towards using metallic floss. If I want to add a little sparkle along with some depth to the piece, then I go with beads.

There are some patterns that call for the Kreinik specifically and you just use the color code numbers, like you do with DMC.

If you're adding it on your own, then simply use a color that matches what you want to enhance...for example, if you're stitching a snowman and want to add some sparkle here and there to him, simply get the white Kreinik and there you have it! You just simply get the color Kreinik that matches whatever regular floss color you're using it with.

Most LNSes will carry the Kreinik that's used most often, a lot of online stores carry the entire line. There are several colors to choose from so you shouldn't have a problem matching anything.

If you visit this site http://www.kreinik.com/kshop/home.php?cat=7 you'll see a full line of what Kreinik has to offer in threads!! This will give you a better idea of what they have! This is the actual Kreinik site, you can find these threads cheaper at other online stores.
