Disney in Cross Stitch: Much More than Just a Mouse
    Nancy L. Haydon
    Printer-Friendly Format

"To think, it all started with a mouse." -- Walt Disney

It can be overwhelming to consider the size of the Disney Empire.  From theme parks to cross stitch, Disney is everywhere. Many crafters find that their projects are for children, and what better way to make children happy than by giving them a Disney cross-stitch project with a picture of their favorite character?

You mean there are Disney Cross-Stitch Patterns?

Absolutely!  Disney knows its demographics and does the research.  It knows that the craft industry is a multi-billion dollar business, so why not get in on it?  Disney has a multitude of cross-stitch patterns for just about any character and for any type of project.  There are pre-designed kits that come with all of your supplies like aida fabric, floss, needles, hoops, and more.  There are also Disney cross-stitch pattern books that allow you to alter and personalize designs for your particular project.

Where Can I Find Disney Cross-Stitch Patterns?

The hard part is finding the Disney pattern you want.  The more rare a character is, the harder it is to find a cross-stitch pattern for that character.  For instance, you can find thousands of Mickey Mouse patterns, but try looking for Mulan.  It gets much more difficult and your choice of patterns decreases.  Now try looking for Figaro from "Pinocchio."  Even harder.

Also, be careful about where you buy your pattern.  Most craft stores and cross-stitch specialty websites are authorized to sell patterns that are approved by Disney.  However, some people are in violation of copyright and trademark laws when they make their own Disney cross-stitch patterns and try to re-sell them without permission from the Disney Corporation.

However, you can create your own Disney cross-stitch pattern using free pattern software available on the net.  If you have a character where it is impossible to find the specific picture you want to use, you can scan the picture into your computer, upload it into the program and create your own pattern.  Remember, though, that you cannot sell this pattern unless you get Disney's permission.

What Types of Things Can I Make with Disney in Cross-Stitch?

If it is stitch-able, you can find the Disney pattern to fit your project.  You can cross stitch everything from bookmarks to towels.  Some avid cross-stitchers have stitched an entire bedding set, including quilting squares.  The only roadblock may come if you want to sell items where you have used Disney patterns or contain Disney characters.

    Can I Sell the Work?

Copyright issues are serious legal business, and this is in no way a website offering legal advice.  Thus, any of the information below should be double checked with a legal expert in your state.  For the most part, though, any item crafted from a pattern is covered by a legal copyright to the designer of the pattern.  Thus, Disney holds the copyrights to their patterns.  They also hold the copyrights to their characters.  Most patterns will tell you that, if you want to sell an item you made from the pattern, you will have to contact the creator of the pattern for permission.  Disney is pretty picky about their copyrights and trademarks (even for the smallest seller), so you will definitely want to check this out to be absolutely sure.

Still, it is okay to give Disney cross-stitch gifts, and they can create a lot of joy in family and friends.  Disney characters are some of the most beloved characters of childhood, and you will also be adding a touch of yourself to a gift when you make it yourself.  With the wide array of patterns and projects available, you can find just about any project to whet anyone's desire for Disney-related products.
