Cute Characters in Cross-Stitch: Things that Make You Go, "Aaw"
    Olivia Storm
    Printer-Friendly Format

Some of the most popular cross-stitch patterns involve cute characters. These are definitely some of the better projects to choose if you are a beginner or someone notorious for not finishing projects. Whether it is creating a kitten sampler for a friend or adding to your dog collection, cute characters can be some of the most fun and entertaining cross-stitch patterns for everyone.

There are very few people that can resist cute characters, so patterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some of these cute character cross-stitch patterns are humorous, like the ever-popular Creature Comforts animal cross-stitch patterns. Other cute characters are religious like the angelic Precious Moments or adorable Suzy Zoo collection of cross-stitch patterns. Still, some of the most popular cute character cross-stitch patterns involve cats, dogs, and rabbits. If you can think of a cute character, there is probably a pattern available for it somewhere.

    Finding Cute Characters in Cross-Stitch

There are a lot of places to find cute characters in cross-stitch patterns. Most craft stores carry pattern books full of cute characters. The larger stores carry patterns from the most popular characters to relative unknowns. If you have a specific character in mind, you can also do a directed search for it online. The internet provides an excellent resource for stitchers looking for rare patterns. You can also find pre-assembled cross-stitch projects containing all the supplies you need: pattern, aida fabric, floss, needles and more, all in one package.

If you have a character in mind, but you cannot find the pattern, try some of the cross-stitch creator programs available for your computer. There are also some free pattern creators online. You can just scan a picture onto your computer, load it into the program, and voila! There is your cross-stitch pattern. Some of the more advanced programs even match the colors to popular floss brands, so shopping is easy.

    Fun Projects with Cute Characters

Almost everyone loves some sort of cute characters -- even men. You can make pillows of a sports team mascot. You can create a Kleenex box for a bathroom. How about a pillowcase for a child's room? Cute characters span the age gap, so you can make a range of projects using these characters.

    Selling Your Projects

Alas, there always seems to be a warning somewhere when it comes to selling crafts. While this is not a website specializing in legal advice, there are some common warnings to heed when it comes to using patterns in items you sell.

When you purchase a pattern, you should read the pattern book to determine if there is a statement saying you need permission to sell any products made using that pattern. Many big companies like professional sports teams, Disney, Precious Moments, and more are sticklers for protecting their trademarked characters. You need to be careful about selling those products and get permission from the creators of patterns before you sell something with that pattern stitched on it.

Also, you cannot sell any patterns created using trademarked characters without the express permission of the company. For instance, you cannot make a pattern of Eeyore and sell it on the net without getting permission from Disney, as they hold the trademark (copyright).

However, if you are able to create your own cute characters, you can sell the patterns and your projects to your heart's content. Also, you are free to give away any project you make with your patterns. People will love the personalized touch of the homemade cross-stitch project along with the smile that the cute character elicits naturally.
