Cross Stitch: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Marion Pike
Many people are inspired to start cross stitching when they see a beautifully stitched design. It is tempting to think that anyone can produce such a work of art -- and indeed, there are those clever souls who have done just that -- but for most people, it is more sensible to start small and easy, and build up skills gradually. Completing some small basic projects successfully can build up your skills and confidence too, and you soon can be addicted to this fascinating and creative hobby.
Beginners to the world of cross stitch need to learn the basic process of how to make a cross stitch, how to read a pattern (chart) - and also to get the necessary equipment before they attempt to stitch a first project. There is plenty of help available on the internet.
The following two websites teach everything that you will need to know to stitch your first masterpiece:
www.yarntree.com/007begin.htm
This site provides a free chart and the instructions to stitch it along with a comprehensive list of the equipment any beginner will need. There are also lots of 'How To' sections such as how to choose fabric and how to begin stitching that build into a great tutorial which is useful for intermediate stitchers too.
www.caron-net.com/patguide.html
This second site has lots of hints and tips to help make counted cross stitch easier for all levels, not just beginners. There's information on fabrics, threads (flosses), basic stitches as well as more advanced ones, and the bonus is that new hints and tips are added every month making this site one to add to your favourites list.
Don't forget to meet other stitchers though any local clubs that exist. You can find out about meetings through your local needlecraft shop. There is no need to feel daunted by meeting more advanced stitchers. Remember that every expert was a beginner once. Furthermore, most stitchers are only too happy to be asked for advice and to share their enthusiasm of cross stitch.
When you know some basics, you may choose to buy a small kit for your first project. This will contain all the materials you need, so this saves you from having to consider amounts of fabric or colours of thread to buy.
Cross stitch magazines and books also have lots of easy-to-follow designs for you to choose from, so consider some basic but attractive patterns.
All beginners to the art of counted cross stitch should be encouraged and congratulated for taking the first step in becoming a master stitcher. Beware though - once you start, you just can't seem to stop! Good luck with your new hobby!
