Stitching Retreats: Rest, Relaxation, and Stitching Galore!
Leni Bernardo
Sometimes we long to stitch, but we find that all the pressures of our daily life get in the way of those relaxing moments with your needle and thread. If you are feeling the pressures of kids, family, work, and more, maybe you need to consider getting away to a stitcher's retreat.
A Retreat for Stitchers? Really?
Yes, really. There are several retreats around the country that focus on cross-stitching while you are away from home. These retreats are meant to be relaxing while also offering classes, materials, and opportunities for people who love to cross-stitch. Some of these retreats also offer tours, music, and other ways to relax and enjoy some time with people who love the same craft you love.
The classes often range in skill levels and are taught by stitching experts. Not only will you be learning from teachers, but it is also a time for people to share their stories and skills with one another. You will have the opportunity to meet other stitchers to pass on what you know while getting away from the "real world."
Where to Find Retreats
The easiest way to find a retreat is to look on the internet. There are listings of cross-stitching retreats around the world. You can find them all over the U.S. and in the U.K., so you have a variety of destinations from which to choose.
Many of the retreats are weekends, and they are quite affordable, ranging from $500 to $700. For instance, A Stitcher's Retreat in Ohio offers a 3-day/2-night retreat for $565 that includes meals and lodging. Plus they have goodie bags, kits and materials, and a concert that is included in the cost of the retreat. Meanwhile, the Stitchworks Weekend Retreat in Tulsa offers kits, prizes, classes, giveaways, food, and lodging for $215. They even have a Stitching Cruise.
What You Need to Know Before You Go…
Okay, so you want to head out to a cross-stitch retreat, but there are some things you need to think about before you sign-up for that time away. First, be sure you are honest about your cross-stitching skills. Many retreats have different classes for different skill levels, so be sure you are signing up for classes that cater to your skill level.
Also, know what you are getting for the cost. Is lodging included? How about meals? Will you need to purchase or bring supplies, or are they included? Will other activities cost you money? Make sure you know how much money you will need to bring.
You will need a positive and open attitude. These retreats are meant for you to relax and learn a little bit, but you will also be meeting people who love to stitch just as much as you do. By the end of the retreat you will have made friends and memories with your fellow stitchers.
But I Can't Get Away!
It's okay if you can't get away for an entire weekend. There are also day-long classes that you can take. You can check with your local craft stores and community centers for classes. Sometimes classes have special themes and costs, but they can still offer you some time away from the pressures of the outside world to work on your cross-stitch projects. Some classes are held weekly, while others are run more as workshops so you will need to remain posted for dates.
Whether you are looking for a retreat or a workshop, taking your stitching out of your home is a great way to ensure that you are getting some relaxing time to do you favorite craft. You can easily find the activity you desire by looking up retreats on the internet or in your favorite cross-stitch magazine, then sign up and enjoy some time with fellow stitchers.
