African Big 5

African Big 5

Because of their great strength, cunning and raw bravery, the African Big Five (comprising: African elephant, Lion, Leopard, African Rhino, and Cape Buffalo) are among the most intriguing animals in the world and have been the purpose of many a Safari for the past 100+ years.

In previous years the goal was to take one of these magnificent animals as a trophy. Today the rifle has largely been replaced by the camera with the purpose of being able to photograph and study them in their natural habitat.

We Aint No Pussy Cats

We Aint No Pussycats

After weaning, and learning how to look after themselves, young males from the big cat families tend to leave their mothers and  sisters (not always of their own free will) and roam freely, either on their own or with their brothers.

A colorful scene from the African veldt featuring three aggressive, powerful young males (Lion, Leopard, and Tiger) on the prowl and looking for trouble.

King of The Beasts

King of The Beasts

"Felix", one of Southern Africa's most powerful male Lions in the wild today. When fully mature, Felix had to be separated from his brother "Zero" because together they were killing fully grown Giraffes for sport; a feat usually performed by a hungry pride of Lions.

Handsome Kudu Bull

Handsome Kudu Bull

A head shot of a powerful young kudu bull, showing the characteristic spiral horns and white horizontal stripe just below his eyes. Their danger and their power comes from the phenomenal strength they possess in their hind legs. When spooked, they can clear a nine foot (2.5m) fence with relative ease, and have the often fatal habit of jumping towards what frightened them.

A Cheetah's Mask

A Cheetah's Mask

The world's fastest land animal (up to 70 mph), the cheetah has a small head with high-set eyes. Its coat is tan with small, round, black spots, and the fur is coarse and short. Note the characteristic Black "tear marks," which run from the inside corner of its stunning orange eyes down the sides of the nose to the outside of its mouth, keeping the sun out of its eyes, and aid in hunting.

A Young Leopard

A Young Leopard

Graceful and stealthy, leopards are famous for their ability to go undetected. They are good, agile climbers, capable of carrying prey up to three times their own weight up a tree to escape the attention of other predators. One of many spotted cats, the leopard has irregular rosettes rather than cheetah's simple spots.

This colorful chart shows a rarely seen shy and elusive young leopard looking for a shady patch or tree to escape from the scorching heat of the midday sun.
